The 7 Styling Tips That’ll Get You Noticed at Fashion Week

Aug 31, 2019 | In Thing, NYFW

One of my fave times of the year is rolling around again and the excitement cannot be contained! Not only for the new collections that are going to be debuted but also for the overall inspiration that’s going to be brewing all over the streets of New York City. From the street style to bumping into new and old fashion friends, the whole thing is just the best adrenaline rush. Over the years of attending Fashion Week, I’ve definitely noticed a few styling tricks that will always have the street style photographers ready to snap away. Whether you’re a seasoned Vet or first-time goer, my tried and tested styling tips are definitely going to make you turn a few heads!

BRING IN THE COLOR

Where are all my color-loving girls and guys? You’re in luck during Fashion Week! Wearing color, specifically bright hues, is always a way to catch people’s attention. I mean how can you ever ignore a bold beautiful marigold or fuschia pink. When going for such bright colors make sure to tone down the rest of the outfit. Keep it simple and just let the color shine. Here’s a great example of one of my past Fashion Week looks.

OWN YOUR CONFIDENCE

Honestly, the biggest style secret you can ever own is your own confidence. With the right level of confidence you can pull off any look even if it may seem a bit out there. If you feel great in an outfit, it’s going to emanate on the outside, which is going to naturally draw people to you. Whether you’re going extravagant or keeping it minimal, let that confidence shine true and you’re going to be a street style star.

GIVE US SHAPE, GIVE US SILHOUETTES

If you’ve been nervous about rocking that oversized -square shoulder blazer or exaggerated asymmetrical dress, Fashion Week is the time to bring it out. Almost everyone is wearing over top looks so you won’t be judged too hard even if it goes wrong. Besides, who cares what people think? Right? If you want to wear that out-of-the-norm shaped piece, then go ahead and do just that. Especially if you’re trying to get street-styled. Photographers love seeing something new and fresh to break up the status quo. Take note here.

COORDINATE LOOKS WITH YOUR CREW

This styling tip is something that has sort of became a trend over the last few years. If you’re linking up with your crew at Fashion Week, coordinate with them to wear complimentary looks. Styling your outfits cohesively with your gang makes a great visual moment and photographers could never resist. Besides, it’s the cutest thing to me and always brightens my day when I see it. Here’s how you do it here.

GO MONOCHROME

You could never go wrong with a sick monochrome look! It just always wins. When doing monochrome, choose a color that compliments your skin tone. And make the look more dynamic and interesting by playing with textures, layers, and lengths. Here one of my fave monochrome moments from a past Fashion Week.

BREAK OUT YOUR BEST HAIR + BEAUTY LOOKS

So you’ve been itching to try that editorial hair and or beauty look? Fashion Week is your time! Debut that new hair color or a new cut. Break out the shimmer or geometric eyeliner. Photographers are always hungry for fresh hair and beauty inspo during this time. And publications have entire articles dedicated just for hair and beauty. They’re practically waiting for you. Don’t disappoint. Here’s probably my coolest NYFW hair moment.

MAKE A SOCIAL STATEMENT

There are a lot of eyeballs from all over the world on Fashion Week. Everyone’s watching and there’s no better time to seize that attention. If there is something special or important to you that you want to share with the world, make it a part of your look. Coordinate with a group of your friends to get that message across. Of course, only do this if it’s a cause you genuinely care about, not just to get a few flicks from photographers or to be plastered all over publications. A great example of this is Kellie Brown’s #FatAtFashionWeek campaign where she celebrates and includes the beauty of plus-sized women in the industry.
