After all of the models have stomped down countless runways, hundreds of street style photos have been taken, and endless after parties and events have been hosted NYFW disappears into thin air as though nothing happened. But the surge of emotion, adrenaline, and inspiration still lingers on in the hearts of everyone that was a part. That’s very much true for me as this past NYFW SS20 was very special. It was my fourth season going as a content creator, an honor that I’m always grateful for because I once dreamt of attending on my own merit. So every time I attend it feels like that dream comes true all over again.
Aside from that, this season I decided to do things a little differently. Instead of going to every show and event just for the sake of it I decided to only go to the things I actually wanted to go to and are genuinely excited about being a part of. Although it was still a crazy whirlwind, my experience was so much for meaningful and I think I just found my new found Fashion Week formula. Here are a few of my absolutely fave moments of the season.
WINE DOWN AT ALLBIRDS X JUST PARTY
If you’ve been following me on Instagram you know that I absolutely adore Allbirds – a sustainable shoe brand out of San Francisco. As if they couldn’t get any cooler, during Fashion Week they teamed up with Jaden Smith’s water company Just to collaborate on a sneaker and hosted the cutest wine down event. We spent the evening under the sunset at Gillian’s tropical oasis. It was just a thoughtful way (on their part) to decompress after the racetrack speed of a Fashion Week day. There was tons of great food and drinks, great conversation and even better people. No Jaden Smith appearance (small tear) but it was beautiful nonetheless.
I LOVE PRETTY COLLECTION
There’s no doubt that I appreciate beauty and the I Love Pretty show gave me a lot of it to feast on. It was my first time attending the show or even hearing about the brand but I was so happy that I got to experience it. Their SS20 collection consisted of the perfect blend between grunge and well “pretty.” I literally wanted every last piece and that rarely happens. It was so refreshing to see a new designer with a distinct voice who isn’t trying to be anyone but themselves. And the collection and overall show (the playlist was amazing) reflected that.
CHROMAT’S TENTH ANNIVERSARY
It’s crazy how time flies. It feels like just the other day I was just falling in love with all the greatness that Chromat is now it’s already been 10 years since Becca McCharren has been slaying us with out of this world swimwear and inclusively. As expected, the tenth-anniversary show brought high energy, all the Chromatbabes, and a killer performance. To pay homage to their 10 years killing the game Chromat gave a collection that revisited past designs from the inception all the way to now. It was really special to see their growth in a physical form and I left feeling super-charged as usual. Something I always appreciate about going to Chromat shows.
PYER MOSS AT KING’S THEATRE
The Pyer Moss show was an entire experience. One of those “I wish you were there” moments. To be honest, I still don’t have the words. But if I had to sum it up, I’d say that it was just the Divine energy that we all need/ needed as black people at the time. Kerby Jean-Raymond paid homage to the creator of Rock and Roll a black woman, Rosetta Tharpe, who often goes under the radar. But more than that he beautifully spelled out to us how far we’ve come, how much we have to give right now, and how much further we’re going to go. The whole experience just felt like a blessing and the biggest reminder that anything is possible. And quite frankly the best Fashion Week event I’ve ever been to. I absolutely can’t wait to continue seeing him soar.
